Who's your favourite architect?
An international panel of judges met over two days in Shanghai lin November 2006 to review all submitted projects. During the assessment, the Archiprix jury became increasingly enthusiastic about the projects submitted to this edition of the competition. They were fascinated by the way in which graduating designers from all corners of the world managed to apply global knowledge and tendencies to local issues. The growing potential for international contact appears to allow the international design community to speak the same language to an increasing degree and to have to the same expertise and references at their disposal. However, the way in which these resources are deployed is unique at every specific location, and that is what makes the assortment of projects presented by Archiprix International so interesting and distinctive.
In Archiprix International 2007, the tone has not been set by visionary and innovative plans, but rather by the quality of the concepts. The elaboration of all nominated projects was extremely refined. Designs were often oriented toward the discovery of spatial solutions for living environments that are becoming increasingly burdened by population expansion, rising energy use, enhanced mobility, and waste production. These environmental problems appear to be a major issue throughout the world, and will probably become even more acute in the near future.
Archiprix International not only offers the possibility to gain insight into the latest developments in architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture at a global level, it also provides an important platform for young talented designers to present themselves worldwide via its website and the workshops. The global exchange of ideas, knowledge and experience is of inestimable value in trying to solve the spatial issues of the twenty-first century, according to the unanimous opinion of the jury.
The jury nominated 21 projects for an award, and, from these, they selected the seven winners. While the jury based their choice exclusively on the quality of the designs, the wining projects turn out to be a good reflection of the geographical distribution and thematic wealth of the submitted projects.
