six groudbreaking ARCHIPRIX projects
six participants of Archiprix International and Archiprix Netherlands discuss their projects with specialists in the field of their plans
David de Boer discusses his graduation project Solarchipelago This graduation plan links the construction of solar parks to the ecological and urban development of the IJmeer near Almere. The designer thus chooses an extremely relevant assignment: it is important to think about energy landscapes. The plan is very cleverly put together. The basic idea is to use solar parks not only for energy generation but also for habitat creation. It is also a dynamic system. When the desired habitat has been created, the solar cells are moved to the next location.
Giorgia Castelli discusses her graduation project A Core for Diversity ‐ Archiprix International & Netherlands Eindhoven University of Technology (architecture) Eindhoven the Netherlands. The graduation design aims to create a 'common ground' where the different groups of residents of the multicultural district of Sint-Joost-ten-Noode in Brussels can meet. The designed public space should promote the local integration of migrants. This graduation plan comprises a large and ambitious study into the potential of public space for bringing different groups of residents together.
Job van den Heuvel ‐ WeGrowCo: An Open Building Strategy ‐ Archiprix Netherlands TU-Delft (architecture) The impressive plan has the ambition to develop the new Strandeiland on IJburg into a fully circular, bio-based and self-sufficient neighbourhood. The plan also builds on the open-building strategy of John Habraken and Frans van der Werf. The strategy that covers all scales is clearly explained. Future residents are involved from the start, so that the intended community of residents is already formed before the final realization.
Ziega van den Berk ‐ The Doggerland, the nursery of the North Sea ‐ Archiprix Netherlands AvB Amsterdam (landscape architecture) With the innovative design for a wind farm on the Dogger Bank, a shallow area in the North Sea, the designer is creating a rich ecosystem on the seabed for marine life. The plan gives a whole new dimension to the design of wind farms at sea by linking the task to the nature development of the seabed. The plan bears a very personal signature, the fascination and visual power of the presentation contribute, like a treasure map, to unlocking the special content of the design.
Lindsey van de Wetering presents her graduation project Poku Oso | Conservatory of Suriname ‐ Archiprix Netherlands AvB Amsterdam (architecture) The magnificent plan for the conservatory takes the viewer on an inspiring cultural journey with an unprecedentedly accurate presentation. The further you delve into the plan, the more interesting it becomes. The design connects a large number of elements in an extremely consistent plan. The various pavilions that make up the conservatory are projected in a dilapidated park. This context and the function are related in every possible way. The park itself, the wind, the rain and the birds all participate in the conservatory. The architecture of the music buildings is inspired by the traditional wooden folk houses. They also function as musical instruments themselves, such as a string house whose walls vibrate with the music, the wind and the rain and a woodwind house made up of architectural mouthpieces. This architecture of the sound leads to a whole new, original expression. The plan also adds a new dimension to the concept of nature inclusiveness through the interaction with the park and its residents. The music buildings are beautiful and worked out in detail. The presentation with models, drawings and films is of unparalleled beauty.
Award Ceremony Compilation Archiprix Netherlands 2021
On Saturday June 19 the independent jury announced the winners of the 41st edition of Archiprix Netherlands.
Shared first prize (in alphabetical order)
Doggerland, the Breeding Ground of the North Sea, designed by Ziega van den Berk
The project adds a whole new dimension to the design of wind farms at sea by hitching the brief to nature development on the seabed. Looked at through the eyes of the marine life, the project examines the ingredients of the wind farm and explores ways of using these to further the quality of the underwater habitat.
A Fire-Scape, designed by Hanna Prinssen
This pioneering landscape architectural design is about dealing with fire in the landscape. Adopting the analogy of the Dutch struggle against the water, now changed into a strategy of designing with the water, this project is the first to design with fire rather than fighting it.
Shared second prize (in alphabetical order)
Poku Oso | Conservatorium Suriname, designed by Lindsey van de Wetering
The music buildings together comprising the conservatory function as musical instruments themselves. This architecture of sound ushers in a wholly new and original form of expression. Social culture, biodiversity and architecture blend together into a new unified whole.
Power, Dreams, and Indifference. Architectural Means in a Young Kosovo, designed by Annebé Brouwer
The project addresses an urgent theme and is fleshed out very seriously and with great conviction. It seeks to bring young people together, giving them a place of their own as well as providing a framework that is to encourage them to get involved in the community.
Dutch Design Ride Interlocking Realm Of Politics And Architecture
Lesia Topolnyk interviews Floris Alkemade, the State Architect of the Netherlands. For the Dutch Design Rides Lesia Topolnyk designed an object related to her graduation project. The object was placed on top of one of the taxis, which bring visitors to locations across the Dutch Design Week. The designed object represents the idea of an extrapolated historic street, an informal decision-making place. To Lesia it is important that her work is contextualized, mentally or physically. Therefore, complementary to the object, she decided to turn the taxi itself into the debate-space, creating a Debate-Ride. Besides riding along with visitors, she invited Floris Alkemade to discuss several topics related to the interlocking realm of politics and architecture, which is the theme of her award winning graduation project:Un-United Nations Headquarters.
Guelba Paiva presents her winning project Infrastructural Landscape and Ecosystem Regeneration. Facing Caatinga’s desertification process and the current appeal for clean energy, this work is based on ‘Landscape Infrastructure’ principles and intends to act within the socio-technical scope in a thoughtful, meticulous and efficient way. The project reflects upon the concepts of identity, territory and resistance and investigates the design of a versatile nature-based infrastructure capable of meeting both landscape and socio-economic demands.
PECHA KUCHA From Religion to Everyday Life
Chen YANG presents the nominated project he designed together with Jianyun CAI From Religion to Everday Life - The Renewal of ShiMa Town, ZhangZhou, China.. This design selects the city level and street level of two individual religious spaces as a case for the design. We hope to provide a template for updating religious space at other levels.
Mohamad Nahleh presents his project that is a favourite of the participants and winner: 185 en-counters. The study reveals a method of materializing the power of dwellers in Karm El-Zeitoun, Beirut and their spaces in the form of architectural interventions by devising a series of public installations. These interventions are positioned on leftover plots deemed unusable. They benefit from the insignificance of residual plots by injecting within them seemingly innocent public spaces that provoke abusive interference.
Sara Pellegrini and Domenico Spagnolo present their award winning project:Waliców, Fortress of Memory. This project proposes the rehabilitation and critical integration of a core of three buildings from the early twentieth century that have survived devastation. The three buildings, located in Ulica Waliców, along with the free areas left over by years of war destruction, eloquently focus the dimension of memory and the documentary depth of Warsaw Ghetto’s history.
Archiprix International participants are invited to join the workshops Conflicting Territories | Conflicting Communities
